Post Introduction - bass player, violinist & audio enthusiast
Hello!

Nicky Here. I'm a bass player and violinist from Western Massachusetts, on the quest for a portable and hi-fidelity bass cabinet / PA that is efficient and has some personality. Hence, I have stumbled upon the greenboy designs!

My current setup is an Avatar 2x12 cabinet with eminence delta-12LFs and an Avatar 4x10 cabinet with eminence 10" neos.

These cabinets are quite good but do not really perform consistently at high volumes. When very loud, the irregularities of the soundstage and sonic dispersion really come out. One note / one place in the room sounds very loud, and another sounds quiet. It's frustrating. . .

My first fEARful project will not be for another couple months, but it will likely be a 12/6/tweeter enclosure . I'm on the forum to see what others have done and whether it is at all possible to create a 4-ohm version of a 12/6. I'm not even sure if eminence makes a 4-ohm version of the 3012. I'm interested in putting a little discrete integrated class D amplifier in my fEARful box so that it's a combo amp. Obviously, a little amp like that can deliver 500 watts at 4 ohms much easier than at 8 ohms. . . . Time will tell.

Best,
Nicky

Hey Nicky,

Em does 4-ohm versions of the Kappalites but there is no real-world gain in volume over the 8-ohm versions being driven by the same amp at its respective loads due to the 4-ohm driver versions being less sensitive.

If you want a 4 ohm cab that will be louder, build a 1212

Or use two 12/6. Or a 12/6 and a 15/6. Or a 12/6 with a 12sub or 15sub.

Even if the 4-ohm version of the Kappalite woofers were as sensitive as the 8-ohms, the two-woofer approach to get to 4-ohms is still quite a bit louder.
